TEXT. Aerococcus urinae is a fastidious Gram-positive coccus most frequently associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs) but also with bacteremia and endocarditis (). A. urinae is classically described as resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT) (3, 6, 14, 15, 19); however, in a previous study (), we observed 98.8% susceptibility to SXT among 80 clinical A. urinae isolates when we

Aerococci urinae is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative, bacterium that grows in clusters, often appearing in colonies that resemble Streptococci viridans [ 1 ]. Its genus was first described in 1953, with the first reported case of A. urinae in a human described in 1992 [ 1, 2 ].

In published reports, aerococci are found in 0.25–4% of all urinary samples sent Species belonging to the Aerococcus genus are isolated from the urine and blood of elderly patients suffering from urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, the clinical significance, phenotypic features and antimicrobial susceptibilities of these underestimated and/or misidentified species remain unclear. From March 2006 to November 2008, among 350 non-enterococcal Streptococcaceae species 2020-04-23 and susceptibility testing were performed with automatic Vitek 2 system (bioMerieux). A. urinae was identified, with susceptibility to Penicillin G, Levofloxacin, Tetracycline and Vancomycin and resistance only to Gentamycin and Trimethoprim-Sulfamthoxazole (SXT).

All aerococcal isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin, vancomycin, and teicoplanin and showed a low-level resistance to gentamicin. Fluoroquinolones, co-trimoxazole, and fosfomycin exhibited a variable activity. Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are newcomers to clinical and microbiological practice. The first report on A. urinae was published in 1989 (14) and the name designated in 1992 and A.sanguinicola was named in 2001 .

PATHOGEN SAFETY DATA SHEET - INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES SECTION I - INFECTIOUS AGENT. NAME: Aerococcus spp..

Aerococcus bacteriuria is known to be common amongst the elderly, with a female predominance . The majority of urinary isolates are Aerococcus urinae (55–66%) followed by Aerococcus sanguinicola (26–46%). Aerococcus viridans is uncommon . Aerococci are also presumed to be part of normal genitourinary tract flora, and isolation in urine may

Aerococcus sanguinicola susceptibility

Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are relatively newcomers and emerging organisms in clinical and microbiological practice. Both species have worldwide been associated with urinary tract infections. More rarely cases of bacteremia/septicemia and infective endocarditis have been reported. Treatment options are therefore important. Aerococcus species är närbesläktade med enterokocker.

Aerococcus sanguinicola susceptibility

Aerococcus urinae is a member of the bacterial genus Aerococcus. The bacterium is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus growing in clusters. Isolates of this genus were originally isolated in 1953 from samples collected in the air and dust of occupied rooms and were distinguished by their tetrad cellular arrangements. [2] ABSTRACT Aerococcus urinae may cause urinary tract infections, bacteremia, and endocarditis. No standardized susceptibility test methods or interpretive criteria have been proposed for this organism.

During a 3-month period, all aerococcal isolates from urinary samples from 2 clinical microbiology laboratories were collected.

viridans and will not recognize A. sanguinicola. The most distinguishing characteristic of Aerococcus sp. is their gram stain morphology of large GPCs in This report describes the clinical sources and phenotypic characterization of 16 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola.Sixteen conventional tests were used to describe and differentiate the 16 isolates of A. sanguinicola from 30 strains of Aerococcus viridans, 27 strains of Aerococcus urinae, and a single strain each of Aerococcus christensenii and Aerococcus urinaehominis. Aerococcus sanguinicola is sensitive to most antibiotics likely to be used for empirical treatment of septicaemia such as β-lactams and vancomycin [ 5 ].

A retrospective chart review was performed on 92 patients from whom 118 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola (n = 52) or Aerococcus urinae (n = 66) were obtained from urine cultures between October 2007 and June 2008 to assess clinical presentation and antimicrobial susceptibilities. The mean patient age was 82 (range 24-101) years. In this study, 120 aerococcal isolates, A. urinae ( n = 81) and A. sanguinicola ( n = 39), of European origin were tested for susceptibility to six antimicrobial agents using the methodology recommended by The European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST).
